Course Syllabus

Overview of urinary tract anatomy and physiology, indications/contraindications, alternatives to catheterization.
Foley, intermittent, suprapubic catheters, French sizes, balloon volumes, drainage systems, securement devices.
Aseptic technique, catheter care bundles, documentation, and monitoring for early signs of infection.
Step-by-step male and female insertion, positioning, securing, ongoing assessment, and troubleshooting.
Safe removal process, post-void monitoring, urinary retention, trauma, hematuria, escalation criteria.
Simulation-based practice, competency checklists, instructor feedback, and remediation as needed.

Current RN, RPN, PSW, or Nursing Student
Basic anatomy & aseptic knowledge
