Differentiate between common ostomy types (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy)
Perform systematic stoma and peristomal skin assessment
Choose and fit appropriate ostomy appliances and accessories
Apply safe techniques for pouch changes, emptying, and skin protection
Recognize early signs of complications and escalate appropriately

Course Syllabus

Digestive and urinary tract overview; indications for ostomy surgery; colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy overview.
Normal vs abnormal stoma findings, peristomal skin assessment, documentation standards.
One-piece vs two-piece systems, barriers, rings, pastes, powders, choosing products for body shapes and output types.
Step-by-step pouch changes, skin cleansing, barrier application, wear-time optimization, odor and gas management.
Leakage, dermatitis, prolapse, retraction, hernia, bleeding, obstruction; when to notify the prescriber or ET nurse.
Body image, dignity, privacy, supporting adaptation, teaching tools for patients and caregivers.
Simulation-based pouch changes and troubleshooting, competency checklists, instructor feedback.
Prerequisites
Current RN, RPN, PSW, or Nursing Student
Basic understanding of aseptic technique
Government-issued ID for attendance verification
