Understand anatomy of central venous access and device classifications
Perform CVAD site assessments and dressing changes using aseptic technique
Perform flushing, locking, and blood withdrawal safely
Recognize and manage complications such as infection, occlusion, and dislodgement
Educate patients on CVAD maintenance and infection prevention

Course Syllabus

Central venous system anatomy, indications for CVADs, comparison of PICC, CVC, and implanted ports.
Lumens, clamps, hubs, dressing materials, and securement systems.
Hand hygiene, PPE, sterile field, chlorhexidine prep, and infection surveillance.
Positive pressure techniques, syringe selection, heparin vs saline locks, and blood withdrawal protocols.
Step-by-step sterile dressing change, needleless connector replacement, and port access/de-access.
Occlusion, infiltration, thrombosis, infection, dislodgement, air embolism management.
Hands-on CVAD maintenance on simulation models with instructor evaluation.
Prerequisites
Current RN, RPN, RT, or Nursing Student
Basic IV therapy and aseptic technique knowledge
Government-issued ID for attendance verification
